The newly released film Toxic, directed by Geetu Mohandas and starring Kannada superstar Yash, opened in theaters on Wednesday to predominantly negative reviews from both critics and general audiences. Following its theatrical debut, archival interviews featuring the director and lead actor rapidly resurfaced across various social media platforms, with online users employing the footage to critique the movie’s execution.
In a previously recorded interview, director Geetu Mohandas discussed her organic filmmaking process, noting that she does not strictly adhere to her initial script and that writing, filming, and editing often evolve dynamically during production. Following the film’s release, critics and viewers began connecting these past remarks to the negative reception currently surrounding the project.
Similarly, an older interview featuring Yash gained widespread attention after he boldly predicted that moviegoers would exit theaters in a state of shock, exclaiming, “What the hell was that?” This prophetic statement has since transformed into a viral internet meme.
Despite the wave of negative word-of-mouth and social media backlash, Toxic demonstrated formidable commercial muscle at the box office. The movie raked in an estimated Rs 101.10 crore net domestically in India on its opening day, alongside a massive global gross of Rs 140.75 crore worldwide.
