Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai marked the 75th anniversary of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur by crediting the campus with launching his career and introducing him to his wife, Anjali. In a video message released by the institution, Pichai reflected on his undergraduate years and noted that the campus served as his initial exposure to computing. Recalling his student days, he shared that campus is where he met his wife, first learned to program, and had his initial opportunities to use a computer while carrying floppy disks around. He added that these formative moments ultimately guided him toward Google and his mission to bring technology to a broader global audience.
Beyond academics and early tech experiences, Pichai reminisced about vibrant campus life traditions, including meals at Harry’s, the Illu festival, late-night study sessions in room B308, and lasting relationships built with wingmates and faculty members. He described his education at the institute as a vital “gift” that shaped his perspective on making a meaningful impact on the world.
Technological Transformations and the Future of AI:
Transitioning to current technological developments, Pichai emphasized the growing role of IIT Kharagpur in driving the next wave of technology, noting that India is increasingly creating innovations that benefit the entire world while giving its new generation a chance to reimagine possibilities. Looking ahead over the next five years, he predicted that artificial intelligence will move away from laboratories and early adopters into the hands of professionals across various sectors, such as healthcare workers, farmers, developers, government officials, and entrepreneurs.
Pichai noted that AI is being built to help people elevate their work and perform it more fulfillingly. He highlighted students as a crucial part of this ongoing progress, recalling his recent interaction with Gemini Student Ambassadors from across India at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. In response, IIT Kharagpur released a statement celebrating its 75 years of excellence, innovation, and nation-building, expressing honor over receiving Pichai’s special message. The institute stated that his reflections capture the enduring global impact of the IIT ecosystem and the power of education, innovation, and technology to transform lives and shape the future.
