India will finalize its bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States as soon as Washington grants Indian exporters a preferential tariff advantage over competing nations. Speaking on September 3 at the National Workshop on “Leveraging FTAs an Outreach Programme”, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that finer details of the BTA will be announced once this preferential rate compared to competition is established.
Evaluation of FTAs and Export Performance:
Goyal emphasized that India has secured favorable terms across all nine free trade agreements finalized to date, ensuring win-win conditions for both parties while safeguarding sensitive sectors such as those affecting farmers, fishermen, MSMEs, and workers, alongside critical industries like pharmaceuticals, textiles, processed agri-foods, and agriculture.
Regarding the status of trade pacts:
The India-UK FTA officially became effective on July 15.
Agreements with Mauritius, Oman, the UAE, and Australia are currently operational.
The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) comprising four countries is set to launch next, followed by New Zealand and the European Union’s 27 member states.
Highlighting robust trade metrics, Goyal noted that India’s exports during the first four months of the current year reached approximately $317 billion, marking an increase of about $36-37 billion compared to the $280 billion recorded during April-July of the previous year. With exports typically accelerating towards Christmas and peaking in the January-March quarter, early August figures indicate that India remains on a solid growth trajectory to expand global market access for domestic exporters.
