Prior to stepping into this global role, Luke J. Lindberg served as the Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). His previous leadership roles include founding and directing South Dakota Trade a public-private venture focused on expanding international export opportunities. Additionally, Lindberg worked as Chief of Staff and Chief Strategy Officer at the Export-Import Bank of the United States and managed international health operations across seven countries with Sanford Health and Sanford World Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Public Policy, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland.

Lindberg succeeds Cindy McCain, who completed her tenure as WFP Executive Director from April 2023 to May 2026. During the subsequent transition period, WFP Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Carl Skau acted as Executive Director.
