On September 19, Northwood High School’s auditorium reached full capacity for a rare and breathtaking performance titled ‘Amba: The Eternal Mother,’ presented by the Shrishti School of Performing Arts. Conceived, directed, and choreographed by the school’s founder, Charulatha Jayaraman, the production brought together Jayaraman and her senior disciples in a profound homage to the Divine Mother. Significantly, the entire artistic showcase was organized to support and benefit Orange County’s Siva Kameshwari Temple.
Rich Musical Ensemble and Multicultural Repertoire:
The production featured a stellar live musical ensemble comprising vocalist Gomathy Nayakam, mridangist Sakthivel Muruganandam, violinist Sigamani, and flutist Sunil Kumar, guiding the audience across the diverse spiritual landscape of Bharat. Moving beyond a single regional narrative, ‘Amba’ celebrated multiple facets of Devi, including Gayatri, Saraswati, Mahalakshmi, Durga Maa, and Kali Maa. The repertoire seamlessly blended traditional musical forms and languages from across India, transitioning from the vibrant rhythms of Maharashtrian Gondhal and the festive flair of “Kolhapur Chi Amba Bai” to the soul-stirring Bengali bhajan “Jago Tumi Jago”.
Artistic Excellence and Spiritual Purpose:
Marked by delicate yet powerful movements coupled with fluid, expressive abhinaya, the performance cultivated an intensely divine atmosphere throughout the auditorium. A standout highlight was Guru Charulatha Jayaraman’s powerful portrayal of Devi Maa, whose commanding presence, grace, and luminous expressions held the audience spellbound. By successfully channeling all proceeds toward the expansion and sustenance of the Siva Kameshwari Mandir, the event beautifully married artistic brilliance with a noble spiritual purpose, leaving a palpable aura of bhakti and prema among all attendees.
