Filmmaker Smriti Mundhra and comedian Hasan Minhaj have partnered on ‘Bollywood Dance U,’ a four-part documentary series following college teams competing in Bollywood fusion dance. The series premiered on September 23 on Minhaj’s YouTube channel. Mundhra created and directed the project, which follows two rival Texas teams as they compete for the championship at Legends, a national Bollywood fusion dance competition. Minhaj narrates the series and serves as an executive producer alongside Prashanth Venkataramanujam through their 186K Films banner, with Emmy-winning producer Joe Lewis also serving as an executive producer.
Creative Background and Related Projects:
Minhaj stated that he and Venkataramanujam were excited to work with Mundhra and her producing team to bring the documentary to a wider audience, noting that his familiarity with the collegiate dance circuit made him a natural fit for the project. The release follows the recent Netflix release of ‘Best of the Best,’ a comedy set on the same collegiate Bollywood fusion dance circuit, which Minhaj stars in and co-wrote with Venkataramanujam. Mundhra’s extensive credits include creating and directing Netflix’s ‘Indian Matchmaking’ and the Bollywood history documentary series ‘The Romantics,’ as well as directing episodes of ‘Never Have I Ever’ and ‘The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh’.
