The United States military has joined humanitarian operations in Nepal following devastating flash floods that resulted in over 1,300 deaths, the destruction of critical infrastructure, and thousands of missing individuals, which includes dozens of American citizens. U.S. forces are actively assisting in delivering urgent lifesaving supplies and equipment to impacted regions. The disaster struck multiple districts along Nepal’s border with China on August 26, ultimately affecting at least 65,000 people. The crisis itself was triggered by a catastrophic glacial collapse and landslide in the Himalayas, which sent massive volumes of water, mud, and debris crashing through the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river corridors, obliterating roads, bridges, and homes.
Congressional Letter Urges Expanded Search-and-Rescue Efforts:
The military’s intervention followed a coordinated push by 30 members of the U.S. Congress who formally urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deploy additional American capabilities to aid search-and-rescue operations. In a letter dated September 4, the lawmakers—whose signatories included Indian-American Representatives Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Suhas Subramanyam, Pramila Jayapal, and Shri Thanedar emphasized the need to utilize every available resource to ensure safety and recovery. The legislators specifically requested daily updates for families and Congress, robust staffing for consular hotlines, and expanded support for repatriation services.
Furthermore, the congressional letter called for the immediate deployment of a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to manage search, rescue, logistics, and medical services. To navigate difficult terrain effectively, the lawmakers urged officials to supply high-altitude equipment, thermal and infrared drones, phone location data, and satellite imagery, while collaborating with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense partners, and commercial satellite providers.
Financial Assistance and Humanitarian Funding:
Alongside military and logistical support, the United States government has announced financial aid commitments to assist with recovery efforts. This includes $500,000 channeled through a global award with Catholic Relief Services, paired with an additional $3.6 million dedicated to broader humanitarian assistance in the disaster-stricken region.
