Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates will warn in an upcoming weekend interview on “Meet the Press” that artificial intelligence could evolve to a level capable of driving events that cause a billion deaths. Despite being one of technology’s leading optimists, Gates noted that there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of individuals with malicious intent utilizing the latest AI tools.
The Dual Potential of AI Technology:
In a recent memo released in August, Gates described AI as a technology far more consequential than virtually any other in history. He cautioned that on its current course and speed, there is a very high chance of a net negative outcome, framing AI as either the greatest equalizer ever invented or the worst source of injustice.
Call for Urgent Government Action:
To prevent the technology from spiraling out of control, Gates emphasized that governments and political parties must work together immediately. He argues that proactive oversight and regulation are essential to address the severe existential risks posed by the rapid and unmonitored advancement of artificial intelligence tools.
