Recent data from the Common Application’s end-of-season report, released on August 20, highlights a striking divergence in the U.S. higher education admissions landscape: while domestic Indian American student applications have expanded rapidly, applications from students residing in India have experienced a notable contraction.
Key Admissions Trends and Figures
Surge in Indian American Applicants: Indian American applicants increased by 6 percent to reach a record 40,949 during the 2025–26 admissions cycle, more than doubling from nearly 18,500 in 2016–17.
Outpacing Peers: The growth in Indian American applicants surpassed Chinese American applicants, whose numbers experienced a modest 1 percent increase to reach 26,296.
Decline in International Applicants from India: In contrast to the domestic surge, international applicant numbers from India plummeted by 15 percent, dropping from approximately 16,900 in the previous cycle to 14,424.
Broader International Shift: This 15 percent drop reversed nearly a decade of continuous growth that previously positioned India to overtake China as the platform’s leading international source country. Furthermore, this sharp decline was the primary driver behind an overall 11 percent fall in Asian international applicants, significantly outpacing China’s 2 percent decline to 18,435 applicants.
