The Hindu Community and Cultural Center (HCCC) Youth & Education division has announced a structured Temple Flower Garland Making Learning Course running from June 19 through September 4, 2026. Designed under the motto “Preserving Tradition Through Seva, Skill, and Devotion,” the hands-on program invites participants to learn the sacred art of preparing floral offerings for temple worship and festival celebrations under the guidance of experienced Flower Seva volunteers.
Schedule, Venue, and Eligibility:
When: Every Friday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, commencing June 19, 2026.
Where: Palani Room, Administration Building, Livermore Temple.
Who: Adults aged 18 and older who have a genuine interest in learning Flower Seva and maintain a commitment to volunteer on Fridays (typically between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM) post-graduation to support ongoing temple operations.

The Sacred Tradition of Flower Seva: Exploring the spiritual significance of floral offerings in daily worship, special pujas, and festivals, viewing the practice as both an art and a devotional act.
The Story of Andal and Floral Offerings: Studying the inspiring legacy of Sri Andal, whose devotion through flower garlands exemplifies the core of bhakti.
Terminology and Garland Styles: Familiarizing participants with specialized vocabulary and traditional styles, including Back-to-Back Malas, Plus Malas, and Gaja Malas.
Deity-Specific Traditions: Understanding how garland designs, sizes, and styles vary based on the presiding deities of the Shiva-Vishnu Temple and specific festive occasions.
Weekly vs. Festival Garlands: Differentiating between standard weekly worship arrangements and complex creations required for Brahmotsavams, Kalyanams, and major celebrations.
Materials, Tools, and Handling: Gaining expertise in selecting flowers, thread types, needles, and tools while learning proper sorting, storage, boxing, and labeling techniques to maintain freshness and efficiency.
Design Patterns and Practical Training: Mastering foundational measurements, symmetry, spacing, and finishing techniques through supervised, hands-on training sessions focused on Back-to-Back and Plus Malas.
Volunteer Guidelines: Reviewing expectations regarding cleanliness, scheduling, teamwork, and the core spirit of seva.
Assessments, Graduation, and Advanced Path:
To successfully graduate and earn a place on the temple’s official Flower Seva volunteer team, participants must meet strict performance criteria, including maintaining a minimum attendance record of 80% and achieving at least 80% across both written and practical evaluations. Furthermore, dedicated graduates who continue volunteering for several months become eligible to enroll in the Advanced Gaja Mala Making Course to master intricate designs utilized during major temple festivals.
