United States President Donald Trump was forced to secretly switch planes in Turkiye last month due to a credible assassination threat linked to Iran, according to reports from prominent US media outlets including The Washington Post and The New York Times. While public statements indicated that Trump would depart the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8 using an older version of Air Force One, security teams executed a complex “deception operation.”
Under the cover of this plan, Trump was smuggled inside a catering container, which transported him to a smaller military C-32A aircraft. This smaller plane safely whisked him away to the United Kingdom, while the traditional Air Force One served as an empty decoy.
Previous Reports and the Qatari-Gifted Jet:
The security risk posed by Iran had previously surfaced when analysts questioned why Trump chose not to leave Turkiye aboard the new Air Force One a Boeing 747-8 gifted to the United States by Qatar which he had used to fly into the country. At the time, Trump publicly brushed off the change, claiming he wanted to fly the older Boeing 747 “for old time’s sake.” However, investigative reporting revealed that the actual catalyst was an active threat originating from Iran-aligned armed groups.
The Decoy Flight and Press Deception:
Journalists assigned to cover the presidential tripalong with several members of the White House staff believed they were traveling alongside the president on the older Air Force One decoy. Crew members instructed reporters in the press cabin to keep their window shades completely closed throughout the flight, heightening existing suspicions regarding high-level security precautions.
Upon arriving in the United Kingdom, Trump made a public appearance exiting the older Air Force One to maintain the illusion, though logistics regarding his precise transfer from the C-32A remain undisclosed. From there, Trump boarded the newer Qatari-gifted aircraft to complete his journey back to Washington, DC.
White House Response:
Addressing the widely circulated reports regarding the security-driven detour, White House Communications Director Steve Cheung issued a formal statement defending the integrity of the presidential fleet and emphasizing the constant danger faced by the administration.
“The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff,” Cheung stated. “As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats.”
