Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) defended his endorsement of Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong on Wednesday, following her defeat in the primary election. Khanna criticized those who attempted to caricature and label Hong based on isolated statements. In a post shared on the social media platform X, he emphasized that while policy differences among Democrats such as debates over single-payer healthcare, free childcare, and pausing data centers are valid, reducing candidates to simplistic labels is counterproductive.
Hong’s Background and Primary Outcome:
Khanna highlighted his long-standing relationship with Hong, praising her resilience as the daughter of Korean immigrants, a single mother, and a small-business restaurant owner who overcame significant hurdles. He noted that as an Asian American, she fought hard to secure representation within the party and the country without any handouts. Meanwhile, Decision Desk HQ projected that Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley secured a victory over Hong, a democratic socialist, in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Primary Dynamics and Political Controversies:
Crowley’s primary win provided center-left and mainstream Democrats with a major victory following a series of recent primary successes by progressive and democratic socialist candidates. During the campaign, both Republicans and certain Democrats targeted Hong over past remarks, including her 2021 call to “cancel Thanksgiving” and previous comments supporting the defunding of the police though Hong clarified in July that she would not be able to defund the police as governor.
Call for Moral Leadership and Unity:
Rejecting tactics reminiscent of political opponents, Khanna asserted that the Democratic Party should refrain from name-calling and reducing individuals’ identities to political labels. Concluding his statement, he emphasized that the nation desperately requires moral leadership capable of rising above division and fostering genuine unity.
