The United States has moved closer to implementing stricter measures to curb Russia’s revenue from energy exports by advancing a new Russia Sanctions Bill in the Senate. Senate members voted 86-12 to proceed with reviewing the legislation. For the bill to become law, it must pass both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
If enacted, the legislation would grant US President Donald Trump the authority to impose up to 100% tariffs on goods imported from countries that continue purchasing Russian oil and gas, directly impacting nations like India and China.
Geopolitical Context and Impact on India:
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022, Western allies have struggled to economically or militarily cripple Moscow, prompting the US to target Vladimir Putin’s energy export revenues. The Senate vote coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the US to rally support.
Despite Western warnings, India has continued purchasing discounted Russian crude oil for its domestic refineries alongside China and other nations. While current trade agreements remain unaffected, the potential passage of this bill poses a significant indirect tariff threat to Indian imports.
