Starbucks announced on September 21, 2026, that it will open a new technology hub in Chennai, establishing its first major technology presence in India. First revealed as a goal earlier in the year for fiscal year 2027, the Chennai office will work alongside global technology and business teams in Seattle, Nashville, London, and Hong Kong to support Starbucks’ worldwide operations. Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan noted that the hub marks a critical milestone in creating a more flexible and globally connected technology organization.
Selection Criteria and Operations:
Chennai was chosen as the location following evaluations of its deep pool of engineering talent, strong retention rates, and capacity to accommodate long-term business growth. The new facility will also enable Starbucks to progressively transition work currently managed by third-party vendors back in-house. While the initiative remains in its early planning phases, recruitment and local hiring are slated to begin in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, with further operational details expected as implementation moves forward.
