Historical Achievement in the Indian Air Force
Indian Air Force officer Bhawana Kanth has etched her name in history by becoming the pioneering woman fighter pilot to successfully complete the elite Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course. This significant milestone earns her a distinction widely likened to the prestigious “Top Gun” status, marking another major leap forward for women in military aviation.
Rigorous Training at TACDE Gwalior:
The demanding 20-week program was conducted at the premier Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) based in Gwalior. Widely regarded as one of the most rigorous training modules within the Indian Air Force, the curriculum is frequently compared to the United States Navy’s elite Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program. It is specifically structured to train select fighter pilots in advanced combat strategy, complex mission planning, and decisive leadership for high-stakes air operations.
A Legacy of Trailblazing Milestones:
Kanth’s latest accomplishment builds upon an extraordinary career filled with ground-breaking achievements. Commissioned in 2016 as part of India’s inaugural batch of women fighter pilots alongside Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh, she has consistently broken barriers in combat aviation. Originally hailing from the Darbhanga district of Bihar and trained as an engineer, she achieved another major feat in 2019 by becoming the first Indian woman fighter pilot cleared for daytime combat missions.
Operational Progression and National Honors:
Throughout her career, Kanth has continually expanded her operational capabilities, initially piloting the MiG-21 Bison before transitioning to the advanced Su-30 MKI aircraft. In addition to her tactical expertise, she has represented the nation on prominent public platforms, participating in the Republic Day Parade in 2021 and subsequently flying in the official Air Force flypast in 2024.
