More than 25,000 individuals converged on downtown San Jose on August 15 to mark two monumental milestones: India’s 80th Independence Day and the United States’ 250th Independence Day. Hosted by the Association of Indo Americans (AIA), the day-long SWADES 2026 festival featured a grand India Day Parade showcasing over 80 floats and active participation from more than 50 Indian-American organizations, bringing together families, cultural groups, and community leaders from across the Bay Area.
Parade Highlights and Celebrity Participation:
The vibrant procession drew massive, enthusiastic crowds along the route, anchored by Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu, who served as the grand marshal. Key cultural attractions included an impressive 80-foot joint India and U.S. Flag Walk, the Tiranga Walk, and a series of dynamic music and dance performances celebrating India’s rich traditions. The event also placed a strong emphasis on youth involvement, with over 100 children performing classical and film dances alongside dedicated art, chess, and essay competitions for families.
Dignitary Presence and Community Support:
The celebration was graced by numerous prominent figures and elected officials, including:
Srikar Reddy, Consul General of India
Matt Mahan, Mayor of San Jose
Sam Liccardo, U.S. Representative
Jeff Rosen, Santa Clara County District Attorney
Ash Kalra and Patrick Ahrens, California Assembly Members
According to AIA, over 40 elected officials participated in the festivities. The day transitioned into a free Day and Night Mela featuring traditional Indian food, shopping, and family activities, and concluded with “Vijay Bharat,” an evening cultural showcase highlighting dances from various Indian states.
Looking Ahead to Future Events:
Following the successful execution of SWADES 2026, AIA extended gratitude to the volunteers, sponsors, city partners, and media groups involved. The organization also announced its upcoming community programs, including Ganpati Bappa Morya on September 19 at Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, and the Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka on October 17 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.
