House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has issued a sharp and decisive condemnation regarding a disturbing nationwide surge in targeted, bigoted hostility directed at South Asian communities. In an official statement, Jeffries characterized this wave of xenophobia as shocking to the conscience and urged political leaders across the political spectrum to unite against racism.
Citing Specific Incidents of Hate:
Bringing attention to recent high-profile events, Jeffries underscored several alarming incidents affecting members of the South Asian community:
The Wyoming Stabbing: He pointed to the violent assault on a Sikh truck driver in Wyoming who was stabbed 17 times. This incident followed a controversial Department of Homeland Security social media post featuring the text, “Get off our roads, you don’t know how to drive, Mr. Singh,” which Jeffries condemned as racist propaganda.
Political Rhetoric in Texas: Jeffries also highlighted remarks made by Bo French, a Republican statewide candidate in Texas, which he criticized as overt racism directed at students celebrating at a University of Texas football game.
Criticism of Political Inaction:
Expressing deep concern over the mainstreaming of bigotry, Jeffries criticized right-wing figures for casually employing derogatory slurs while mainstream Republicans largely stand by. He faulted the GOP leadership for permitting demeaning rhetoric and hateful behavior targeting South Asian populations, declaring such actions to be completely “unacceptable, unconscionable and un-American”.
Call for Unity and Inclusion:
Reaffirming the foundational identity of the nation, Jeffries stated that the United States thrives as a diverse mosaic of individuals from across the globe who work diligently to pursue the American dream. Concluding his address, he pledged that House Democrats will actively confront racism and xenophobia wherever it appears and issued a direct call for Republicans to join those efforts.
